Powerlifting Legend Stanisław Mentel Sets New World Records at 70

Powerlifting Legend Stanisław Mentel Defies Age Barriers, Sets New World Records

Polish powerlifting icon Stanisław Mentel has continued to shatter expectations and rewrite the record books at the ripe age of 70. Competing in the Masters 4 (M4) category at the 2024 European Powerlifting Federation (EPF) European Bench Press Championships (EBC), Mentel extended the world record on his second lift to a staggering 183 kilograms, only to push it even further to 193.5 kilograms with his final attempt.

Mentel’s remarkable performance dispels the myth that Masters lifters, those over the age of 40, have been competing their entire lives. In fact, the Polish bench press specialist only made his international debut at the age of 54, and went on to claim his first international gold medal at 60. Since then, he has amassed an impressive nine Masters world titles, both in the raw and equipped divisions.

“Using only wrist wraps as support, Mentel showcased his unparalleled strength at the EBC. Utilizing the maximum grip width permitted in International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) competition, he effortlessly brought the bar to his chest and waited for the ‘press’ command before locking out the weight to claim his fifth world record of 2024.”

Just a few months later, in May 2024, Mentel traveled to Austin, Texas, to compete at the IPF World Bench Press Championships (WBC). Displaying his mastery of the bench press, he emerged victorious in both the classic and equipped categories, cementing his status as a true double world champion.

Mentel’s remarkable achievements serve as a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to strength and excellence in the sport of powerlifting. As the IPF age categories are based on birth year rather than actual birth date, the 70-year-old powerhouse will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in the M4 division.

The powerlifting community eagerly awaits Mentel’s next appearance on the international stage, which is likely to be at the 2025 IPF World Bench Press Championships in Drammen, Norway. With his unparalleled dedication, skill, and unbreakable spirit, the ageless wonder is sure to continue rewriting the record books and inspiring athletes of all ages.
