The 2024 World’s Strongest Man Competition: Withdrawals and Perseverance
The 2024 World’s Strongest Man competition is set to captivate audiences from May 1-5 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. As one of the most grueling events in the sport, the athletes must endure up to four days of intense competition, facing the high risk of injuries.
Sadly, a few notable competitors have been forced to withdraw from the event. Bobby Thompson, who was struggling with calf muscle issues since the 2024 Arnold Strongman Classic UK, withdrew after the first event, where he managed to carry the Webster Stones for 20 meters before being seen limping off. Hopefully, his potential injury is not too severe, and he can return to competition later this season.
Moreover, several pre-competition withdrawals have occurred. Martins Licis, who was dealing with long-term sciatica issues, decided to prioritize his health and not compete. Mateusz Kieliszkowski also withdrew due to an Achilles tendon injury, while the 2020 WSM Champion, Oleksii Novikov, was sidelined by an unspecified injury.
Lastly, Shane Flowers and Kristjan Jon Haraldsson withdrew just days before the start of the competition. Shane suffered a torn bicep, and Haraldsson sustained a knee injury during training, both while preparing for the Axle Press event.
“Although these withdrawals are unfortunate, they are an unavoidable aspect of the grueling nature of Strongman competitions. The remaining athletes will continue to push themselves to the absolute limit, as that is what it takes to emerge victorious at the prestigious 2024 World’s Strongest Man event.”
