The 2021 World’s Strongest Man Competition Heats Up in Sacramento
Sacramento, California, June 15th, 2021 – As the 2021 World’s Strongest Man contest kicks off on June 15th, one competitor believes that endurance rather than pure strength could prove the deciding factor in this year’s competition.
The majority of this year’s WSM events will take place in scorching weather, with forecasts predicting temperatures as high as 110°F during the event week. For a Canadian athlete like JF Caron, this represents a significant departure from the conditions he is accustomed to.
Speaking to Fitness Volt ahead of the competition, the Quebec native joked about the heat, but also acknowledged the potential impact on the other competitors. “The most consistent athlete will win, and with this warm weather, the toughest guy will win, maybe not just the strongest,” Caron said.
Caron’s perspective stems from his experience at last year’s World’s Strongest Man, where he finished in third place. He notes that the only athlete who avoided mistakes in 2020 was Oleksii Novikov, the eventual winner. Caron believes that a single mistake could alter the entire outcome of this year’s contest.
Just weeks after his third-place finish at the 2020 WSM, Caron competed in the inaugural Shaw Classic, where he set a new world record in the Hummer Tire Deadlift with a pull of 1202lb. Though surprised by his own performance, Caron believes he is even stronger now as he prepares for the 2021 edition of the World’s Strongest Man.
However, Caron acknowledges that beating his own record may prove challenging this year, as the event lineup has expanded from six to eight competitions. Additionally, the Hummer Tire Deadlift is scheduled to be the first event on the second day, following a grueling squat for reps challenge the previous day.
Despite his age (he turns 39 this month), Caron remains passionate about the sport of strongman and is excited to compete at the highest level once again. He believes the competition will be razor-thin, with athletes like Brian Shaw and Tom Stoltman starting with an advantage in certain events.
Caron’s goal is to take the contest one step at a time, focusing on consistency and avoiding mistakes. As he puts it, “I just love strongman, it’s that simple. I love to compete.”
