Strongman Athlete James Spurgin Crushes 570-Pound Deadlift and Squat Triples
In a remarkable display of strength, adaptive strongman athlete James Spurgin has taken the strongman community by storm with his recent training feats. On May 15, 2024, Spurgin shared a video on his Instagram (@1armpower) showcasing his incredible raw lifts.
Coached by 2016 Europe’s Strongest Man and two-time Britain’s Strongest Man, Laurence Shahlaei, Spurgin pulled a staggering 570-pound (260-kilogram) deadlift for three smooth reps. If that wasn’t impressive enough, he then went on to squat the same weight for at least three reps, demonstrating his immense power and stability.
“This wasn’t a one-time occurrence for the multi-sport athlete, as he has a history of breaking records and excelling in the world of adaptive strongman.”
In 2020, Spurgin set the one-armed partial deadlift world record by pulling an astounding 675 pounds (306 kilograms). Earlier in 2024, he also box squatted 628 pounds (285 kilograms) for a triple using a transformer bar made by Kabuki Strength.
Spurgin’s competitive journey has been impressive, with podium finishes in various adaptive strongman competitions over the years. In 2016, he placed second at America’s Strongest Adaptive Athlete, and in 2017, he finished fifth in the Standing Division at both Arnold’s Strongest Disabled Man and America’s Strongest Disabled Man. Spurgin’s dominance continued, as he claimed first place in the Standing Division at the Static Monsters competitions in both 2019 and 2020, and the World’s Strongest Disabled Man Standing C2 Division in 2020.
With adaptive strongman events gaining momentum, the upcoming England’s Strongest Disabled Man and Woman 2024 (May 18-19) and the Magnús Ver Magnússon 2024 Adaptive Strength World Championship (November 1-3) are set to showcase the incredible feats of athletes like James Spurgin.
