China Announces Powerhouse Weightlifting Team for 2024 Paris Olympics
In the lead-up to the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the world has eagerly awaited China’s announcement of its weightlifting team. On May 10, 2024, photojournalist Yilin Yang posted a press release detailing the six Chinese weightlifters selected to compete in the upcoming Games.
China, the dominant force in modern weightlifting, has chosen the following athletes to represent the nation in Paris:
Men’s Division:
- Li Fabin (61kg)
- Shi Zhiyong (73kg)
- Liu Huanhua (102kg)
Women’s Division:
- Hou Zhihui (49kg)
- Luo Shifang (59kg)
- Li Wenwen (+81kg)
China’s lightweight divisions have long been their stronghold, and this year is no exception. Li Fabin, the world’s top-ranked 61kg lifter, is a heavy favorite to secure gold after winning 11 of his 12 international competitions over the past five years.
In the middleweight men’s 73kg class, Shi Zhiyong makes a return to the Olympic stage. The two-time gold medalist took a break from international competition but is now poised to chase a third title, despite a recent setback at the IWF Grand Prix II.
China has historically struggled in the heavier weight classes, but that may change in Paris thanks to Liu Huanhua. The powerful 102kg lifter, nicknamed “Gigachad,” has burst onto the scene, making the podium in all six of his international appearances since 2022.
On the women’s side, China flexes its muscles across the board. Hou Zhihui looks to defend her Tokyo 2020 gold in the 49kg division, while newcomer Luo Shifang has emerged as a dominant force in the 59kg category. Super-heavyweight Li Wenwen, who holds all three world records in the +81kg class, is widely expected to secure gold in Paris.
With their comprehensive team, China aims to continue its weightlifting dominance on the global stage at the 2024 Olympics.
